Passengers Fly into Pinellas at Record Rates in March

April 13, 2018

Records continue to be broken at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) in Pinellas County Florida. The airport announced that March 2018 was its biggest month on record for PIE passenger flights— inbound and outbound. There were 237,021 passengers in the month of March, which equates to a 15 percent increase over 2017. In addition, there has been a further record broken with a 13 percent increase in passengers for 2018 compared to last year.

March is traditionally a busy month for PIE due to spring break drawing lots of visitors to Pinellas County and its award-winning beaches. For example, Clearwater Beach has been rated No. 1 beach in the US for the second time in three years and No. 7 worldwide by Trip Advisor and continues to be a spring break favorite destination.

So what does this mean for PIE and its future? The steadily increasing passenger counts indicate that PIE is on track for another record-breaking year of passenger growth. PIE exceeded two million passengers in 2017, breaking it’s annual passenger record for the third time and showing double-digit passenger growth for the fifth year in a row.

PIE’s major carrier Allegiant, which handles about 95 percent of PIE flights, also continues to grow. It just announced twice-weekly non-stop service to Nashville commencing June 14. This new route will operate year round, making a total of 55 cities available from PIE with Allegiant.
